The Roland TR-808 Rhythm Composer, released in 1980, was one of the earliest programmable drum machines. Despite initially being a commercial failure, the TR-808 became a staple in the music production of the 80s and 90s, with its distinctive "booming" bass kick and "tinny" snare establishing it as a key player in the development of electronic music and leading to its continued use and popularity, even after its discontinuation in 1983.
